Tenn. 15th in private equity investment

Private equity investors are finding fertile opportunities in Tennessee. In 2011, 42 Tennessee-based companies received more than $3.2 billion in private equity investment , according to a report released today by the Private Equity Growth Capital Council, an industry lobbying group.

Compared to other states, Tennessee ranks 15th in total investment value. The top five states are Texas, $20.5 billion; New York, $18.6 billion; California, $15.7 billion; North Carolina, $10.4 billion; and Oklahoma, $8.7 billion.

Are tax increases in our future?

The Knoxville Economics Forum will step into the middle of one of the most divisive issues of the presidential campaign at its April 20 meeting – tax increases.

Jane G. Gravelle, a specialist in the economics of taxation, is the keynote speaker. Her topic: “The Long Term Fiscal Outlook: Are Tax Increases in Our Future?”

Cutting taxes, especially corporate tax rates, are a central theme of the Republican candidates campaign, while President Barack Obama and the Democrats want to raise taxes on millionaires.

Trump vs. Alexander: Looking for a rematch

Mixing politics and business is always fun as we’ve seen this week with the emerging fued between celebrity businessman Donald Trump and Tennessee Republican Sen. Lamar Alexader.

lamar_alexander.jpgAlexander tossed the first jab, telling CNN that Trump has “absolutely no JAPAN+TRUMP(2).jpgchance of winning” the presidency. But Trump won the bout with this smackdown: “Sen. Lamar Alexander, who I do not know and have heard very little about over the years, perhaps because of a certain ineffectiveness … “

Ouch!

Let’s hope there’s a rematch. It’s going to be a long presidential campaign and we will need comic relief.
