Tennessee has eighth best business climate

Tennessee has the eighth best business climate in the country, according to Site Selection magazine’s 2012 rankings of the most business-friendly states.

That’s unchanged from a year ago. In 2010, Tennessee ranked second on the magazine’s rating.

North Carolina captured the top spot on this year’s rankings, which were released today.

The annual Top Business Climate rankings are based on tax burden criteria, new and expanded business activity and a survey of corporate site selectors.

Will Sears choose Tennessee for new HQ?

The race to win Sears Holding Corp. appears to be heating up.

NBC in Chicago and the Detroit Free-Press are reporting that Tennessee has intense competition for the retail giant’s corporate headquarters, saying Michigan is working to lure Sears’s headquarters with incentives worth about $50 million, including tax breaks, housing incentives and relocation grants.

Besides Tennessee, New Jersey, North Carolina and Texas reportedly also are in talks with Sears about a possible relocation.

No word on where in Tennessee the Sears folks would locate. Could Knoxville be on the short list?

Alcoa’s dam offensive turns on ‘charm’

Fortune takes an interesting look at Alcoa Inc.’s battle with North Carolina to keep control of four hydroelectric dams on the Yadkin River.

Fortune reports that the aluminum giant has “turned on the charm offensive with state and local officials.”

Never thought I would see Alcoa called charming.
