Knoxville metal shop Steel Plate Fabricators is one of two East Tennessee companies to be named a finalist for 2013 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.
Also named a finalist is specialty chemicals maker Eastman Chemical of Kingsport, Tenn., Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense office announced Tuesday.
The Freedom Award is the Defense Department’s highest recognition presented annually to employers “for going to extraordinary lengths” to support their employees who serve in the Guard or Reserve.
The nominations deadline for the 2013 Freedom Award, which is given to civilian employers for their support of employees serving in the National Guard and Reserve, is less than two weeks away.
Nominations for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award must be received by Jan. 21. The award is the nation’s highest recognition presented to employers.
The Tennessee Valley Authority was one of 15 employers nationwide to receive the award in 2012 and was a semifinalist for the award in 2011 and 2010.

National Guard and Reserve members and their familiers have until Jan. 17, 2011 to nominate employers for the award which is given annually to recognize businesses for outstanding support of Guard and Reserve members.
