Now’s the time to invest in Regal Entertainment — or is it?

Movie theater attendance was down last year and 2012 expectations are uncertain. Even so, a writer for the investment website Investopedia says today it’s a good time to own Regal Entertainment Group stock.

Taking a less rosy outlook on the Knoxville-based movie theater operator are a pair of financial research firms that on Tuesday downgraded Regal stock and lowered their price estimates.

Regal invests in more IMAX screens

Movie theater operator Regal Entertainment Group is pumping more money into large-screen theaters. The Knoxville-based company said two new IMAX theaters will open this month and two in December — just in time for the all important holiday movie season.

New IMAX locations in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., will open in November, followed by locations in Atlanta and St Louis in December.

The announcement comes just a few weeks after Regal announced that it had expanded its agreement with Imax Corp. to add another 16 to 25 large-screen theaters around the country.

Good sign for downtown Knoxville

News that the TIF for the Regal Riviera Stadium 8 movie theater on Gay Street was paid off earlier than expected is a bit of welcome news for city government and downtown developers.

Opening a downtown movie house was a risky move and the project had its share of critics.

Knoxville-based Regal Entertainment Group obviously had questions, which is why the city put together a TIF to help mitigate the risk.

The theater’s success should quiet the critics and encourage developers to push ahead with other downtown projects.

Movie theater prices headed higher

CNNMoney.com reports movie fans will pay more at the box office starting this weekend. IMAX movie prices will go up the most, but price increases are expected across the board.

Officials with Knoxville-based Regal Entertainment Group, the largest movie theater operator in the country, could not immediately be reached for comment.
