Analysts expect profit swing from E.W. Scripps

Analysts are looking for media company E.W. Scripps to report a turnaround from a year ago when it releases its third quarter financial statement on Friday.

Scripps, the parent company of the Knoxville News Sentinel and the Memphis Commercial Appeal, is expected to report a profit of about 9 cents per share compared to a loss of 9 cents per share in the third quarter last year.

Revenues are projected to be up about 27 percent to $214 million for the quarter.

Restaurant chain Ruby Tuesday Inc. reports earnings today after the markets close. According to a Motley Fool report, analysts expect the Maryville-based company to report an increase in revenue, but a loss of about 6 cents per share.

Aluminum company Alcoa Inc., which has a major manufacturing plant in Blount County, reports Monday. Analysts expectations are mixed. Alcoa is traditionally the first of the major companies to release its quarterly report.

Miller Energy restates financials, KPMG letter included

Troubled East Tennessee oil company Miller Energy Resources has filed an amended 10-K,
Miller_Energy02.jpgincluding a letter from accounting firm KPMG.

Investors responded positively to the new 10-K. Miller’s shares were up more than 45 percent in afternoon trading.

Miller plans a conference call with investors at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The new filing devotes considerable attention to the controversy surrounding Miller’s previous comments about an audit by KPMG.

Is merger the answer for National Coal?

Knoxville-based coal producer National Coal Corp. is taking a look at possible merger with other coal companies to help it bounce back from a tough year.

National Coal announced Tuesday it has hired a financial advisor to examine merger and other financial alternatives.

The company has battled hard in recent months to restore balance to its balance sheet. It has sold millions of dollars worth of assets and is fighting to avoid delisting by Nasdaq.

Merger is only one strategic option. It will be interesting to see what the advisor recommends.
