Knoxville metal shop Steel Plate Fabricators is one of two East Tennessee companies to be named a finalist for 2013 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.
Also named a finalist is specialty chemicals maker Eastman Chemical of Kingsport, Tenn., Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense office announced Tuesday.
The Freedom Award is the Defense Department’s highest recognition presented annually to employers “for going to extraordinary lengths” to support their employees who serve in the Guard or Reserve.
TVA is one of 15 employers nationwide selected to receive the 2012 Freedom Award in recognition of the Knoxville-based utility’s commitment to workers who serve in the National Guard and Reserve.
The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award is the highest recognition given to civilian employers by the Department of Defense.
Nashville marketing firm iostudio was also named a Freedom Award winner. More than 3,000 employers nationwide were nominated for the 2012 award.
The 2012 winners were announced Friday by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense agency.

The deadline is Jan. 16.
The annual award is the Defense Department’s highest recognition for civilian employers. It was established in 1996 to honor employers who provide exceptional support to Guard and Reserve members.
