Are you getting a holiday bonus?

With the economy slowly improving, is your boss feeling generous this holiday season?
Not quite half — 45 percent — of U.S. employers plan to give employees holiday bonuses, according to a CareerBuilder survey released today.
That’s virtually unchanged from 46 percent a year ago.
Cash isn’t the only holiday perk. Fifty-nine percent of the companies surveyed said they would hold holiday parties this year, while 35 percent plan to give employees gifts, according to the survey.
Harris Interactive surveyed 3,484 workers and 2,099 hiring managers and human resource professionals representing a variety of industries and size of companies.
Bosses aren’t the only ones giving holiday gifts. Twenty-two percent of workers plan to give gifts to co-workers and 21 percent will give their boss a present.
Surveyors also asked workers to list some of the “most unusual” gifts they’ve received from a co-worker.
On the list:
50 pounds of fresh Louisiana shrimp
A picture of the boss’s family
A plaster cast of a co-worker’s hand
A half-eaten box of candy

Which excuse do you use?

Nobody likes to be called on their day off to come into the office. Telling the boss no takes some quick thinking. The best excuse I’ve heard for when the phone rings on the weekend — “Sorry, I just had a beer. I shouldn’t drive.”

A creative excuse and better than relying on the lame “I’m sick” excuse.

According to a recent study by Harris Interactive, 30 percent of workers have faked illness to get out of work.

However, some workers are a lot more creative when coming up with excuses. Here’s a list of some of the better ones, according to a recent CareerBuilder report. Feel free to borrow one the next time you want to stay home.

— Employee’s sobriety tool wouldn’t let the car start.

— Employee forgot he had been hired for the job

— Employee’s dead grandmother was being exhumed for a police investigation

–Employee’s toe was stuck in faucet

–Employee said a bird bit her.

Can you afford to retire?

Job OpeningsA new survey of workers close to traditional retirement age finds 57 percent plan to keep working after retiring from their current job.

Eleven percent of the workers surveyed said they don’t expect to ever retire, according to the CareerBuilder survey released this month.

Finding a new job isn’t always easy for older workers who often find themselves overqualified. But the market for mature workers is improving, the survey found.

Can you afford a vacation this year?

A recent survey by CareerBuilder, an online job site, found that a growing number of U.S. workers are finding it difficult to get away from work. Twenty-four percent of workers surveyed said they don’t have the money for a vacation this year, up from 21 percent in 2010.Beach+Pollution.jpg

Another 12 percent of the more than 5,000 full-time workers surveyed said they have the money, but still aren’t planning to take a vacation.

The good news is that with the economy improving, 36 percent of workers said “they feel more comfortable taking a vacation than they did in 2010,” CareerBuilder reported.
