Encouraging social entrepreneurs

The New Entrepreneur blog, has an interesting piece on a new Maryland law that encourages development of public-minded business ventures by “social entrepreneurs.”

Maryland’s law creates a new corporate form called “benefit corporation” which allows mission-driven businesses to “commit their for-profit ventures to a specific public good,” the Business Week blogger says.

The law could open up new sources of capital for social entrepreneurs and protect them from certain kinds of lawsuits.

Seems to me Tennessee would do well to consider something similar.
