HGTV Magazine passes first test

The test of HGTV Magazine apparently went well. HGTV and its partner Hearst Magazines HGTVM_020112-Cover_s4x3_al.jpgsaid today they will officially launch the new magazine with a June/July issue that will be available in mid-May.

Three more issues are planned this year.

The home lifestyle magazine will launch with a base of 450,000, “making it one of the largest consumer magazine launches of the past decade,” according to a news release.

HGTV is wholly owned by Knoxville-based lifestyle media company Scripps Networks Interactive Inc.

Hearst Magazines, a unit of Hearst Corp, is one of the largest magazine publishers in the country. It produces a diverse lineup of magazines, including iconic brands such as Cosmopolitan, Popular Mechanics, Esquire and Good Housekeeping.

Dan Fuchs, associate publisher of O, The Oprah Magazine since 2004, has been named publisher and chief revenue officer of  HGTV Magazine.

Hordes of new magazines hit the newstands every year. Few survive long-term.

But by partnering with Hearst and landing an Oprah Magazine editor, HGTV is giving its magazine a better than decent chance of surviving beyond the first year.
