Morristown recently landed a potential big deal — Freedom Energy Diesel’s proposed $405 million coal gasification plant that would create an estimated 600 jobs.
Freedom Energy still has a number of hoops to jump through, but the plant would be a major boost for the regional economy if it happens.
It’s good that Morristown stands to benefit, but the project could have come to Knox County.
I heard recently that before Knox County Commission killed the planned Midway Business Park, it was on Freedom Energy’s lists of possible plant locations. When the biz park was nixed, Freedom focused elsewhere.
A plant that turns coal into liquid fuel undoubtedly would generate considerable controversy no matter where it is built.
Even so, it was nice for Knox County to be considered as a possible location. It would be nicer if Knox County had more business park options.
