Updated with Regal comments.
Theater operator Regal Entertainment Group said on Thursday it would offer a healthier snack option for some of its movie goers.
A Fruit, Nut & Snack Pack is now available at theaters in California, Florida, New York and the Pacific Northwest, the Knoxville-based company said in a press release.
The new snack pack includes invidually wrapped bags of almonds, pretzels and raisins. The alternative snack is being offered in response to customer suggestions and focus group recommendations.
No word on when, or if, the new snack pack would be coming to Knoxville.
Regal officials says depending on how test markets perform, the healtheir snacks could make their way to Knoxville.
I called Regal’s corporate office to find out the answer. I’ll let know what they say.
Given that nearly one-third of adult Tennesseans are obese, one wonders what snacks were suggested by Regal’s Tennessee customers. Fried Oreos?
Snarkiness aside, and speaking as a movie goer who should shed a few pounds, a healthier snack option would be a good thing. For those who have forgotten, Tennessee and Alabama tied as the second fattest states in the seventh annual “F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America’s Future” report released earlier this year.
Both states weighed in with a 31.6 percent overall adult obesity rate in the report by the nonprofits Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
