Countdown to Tipoff – 43 Days: Five areas of concern for 2012-13 Vols

Tennessee fans have plenty of reasons to put on the blinders and ride into the 2012-13 season bursting with optimism. I’ll go ahead and play the Grinch. Here are five areas of concern to keep an eye on. There are others as well, but they will have to wait until next week’s statistical breakdown of the Vols.

Countdown to Tipoff – 44 Days: How UT’s non-conference slate can impact its RPI come Selection Sunday

(NOTE: Today I was going to write about five off-the-beaten-path items to watch out for. Then my No. 1 item turned into a story in and of itself. I’ll get to those four other items at some point)
Come Selection Sunday, each team’s RPI is dissected. Tennessee’s spot at No. 90 last season wasn’t exactly eye-popping enough to offset an 18-14 regular-season record.
Is it too early to talk about factors in the 2012-13 RPI? Probably.
Do I care? No.

Countdown to Tipoff – 45 Days: Five things I learned on UT’s Italian tour

While working to avoid stockhold syndrom as an imbedded writer with the Tennessee basketball team, I was able to gain some added insight on the Vols as they took form in the 2012-13 preseason. Armani Moore at point guard? Lingering troubles in the motion offense? Team chemistry? That and more answered here …

Jarnell Stokes propels 6-foot-7, 225-pound brother, Isaiah, to Internet stardom

Stokes Tweet.jpgIt all started with this tweet.
With the simple click of a finger, UT sophomore Jarnell Stokes (@JarnellStokes) unknowingly turned his “little” brother, Isaiah, into an Internet sensation the past two days.
“So my lil big bro @isaiah_stokes play football now lol,” he wrote.
Soon enough, the picture of the 6-foot-7, 225-pound 8th grader was everywhere. View image

Countdown to Tipoff – 46 Day: Hindsight is 20-20 on 2011-12 Vols

Seventy-one.
That’s how many votes Tennessee received in the 2011-12 SEC preseason media poll — just 14 more than South Carolina and nine less than Auburn.
Tabbed to finish 11th in the league last season, the Vols promptly silenced the cynics. A 10-6 finish landed UT in a three-way tie for second place. Georgia and Auburn finished in a tie for 10th at 5-11, while South Carolina landed in last at 2-14.
Before Tennessee embarks on 2012-13 — a season they’ll be slotted far higher in the preseason poll — let’s look back at this time last year.
Why was Tennessee picked to finish 11th?

Robert Hubbs – Check. AJ Davis – Check. What’s next for the Vols?

Following a wild Monday that lassoed verbal commitments from Dyer County High School shooting guard Robert Hubbs III and Buford (Ga.) High School comb-forward A.J. Davis, one question has settled over Tennessee basketball.
What happens to the Vols’ final scholarship in 2013?
