Gameday 13 Vol Stuff

Unlike last year’s season-ending game against Kentucky, the 2012
Vols do not have a bowl game to play for, do not have a 26 year old
streak to continue, do not have their head coach on the sideline and
they do not know who will be named to run the football program in a
few days or weeks.  The Tennessee football program is not where it
needs to be or where the fans expect it to be.  By any measuring stick,
2012 has been a disappointing season.  A season that appeared to offer
a much different ending when it kicked off in the Georgia Dome somehow
took a nosedive after a few tough early season losses and landed in a
place Vol fans didn’t want to be again.  What happened? Whose fault was
it? Did the new defensive staff hose the season up?  Do the Vols just
not have SEC caliber talent? The questions are endless.  But the conclusion
is once again the painful outcome of no bowl and another coaching change.

I cannot imagine the pressure that is currently on Athletic Director Dave
Hart and the UT administration.  This hire has to be right.  It has to be
a coach that can get results on gamedays.  It has to be a coach that can
attract top level recruits to wear orange.  It has to be a coach that will
pump up a fan base that is totally deflated after 5 long years of losing
records and 3 coaching changes.  I’ve been following Tennessee football
since the 60’s and I cannot recall a more important hiring decision than
what is in progress on The Hill at this time.

So while all the drama is happening around another coaching change for the
Vols, somehow the team has to show up & play a long-time rival who is
also going through a coaching change.  The reality is Kentucky started the
downfall of Derek Dooley as the Tennessee coach.  Many fans gave up on Dooley
being able to get the program back to the top of the SEC after the pathetic
performance in Lexington last season.  Fair or not, that game defined the
fans expectations of Dooley going into 2012.  Unfortunately, those expectations
played out during the season and now an iterim head coach attempts to close
out the 2012 season with an infrequent victory.  If not for the chaos that is
also present with the Kentucky program as the Cats go through a coaching change,
there would not be a lot of reason for optimism that the Vols could defend
Neyland and get the W.  On this last gameday of the 2012 season for the Vols
and Cats, there should be enough motivation from last year’s loss and pride
to defend the home field against the visiting team.  It’s a little late but the
Vols should be able to finally get a win in the SEC.  Back-to-back seasons with
a single conference victory, who could have ever imagined the Tennessee Volunteer
football program at that level?

I cannot imagine the pressure that is currently being felt by the team that is
charged with making a coaching hire and fixing the Tennessee football program.
This one is big, let’s all hope the powers in charge hit the home run that is
desperately needed.
