What’s wrong with Tennessee football has nothing to do with Derek Dooley

This was one of the links in today’s Halloween Vol Stuff that is a good read worth extra emphasis.  We all knew Dooley stepped into a mess but this article does an excellent job underscoring the negative impact that the 07, 08 and 09 recruiting classes have made on the 2010-11 win-loss results of Dooley’s first two teams.  Insighful article with a good analysis of just how critical quality recruiting and player development is in the SEC.

Gameday 9 Vol Stuff

Well, let’s see if we can all agree on a plan for
Gameday 9.  How about we agree that the Vols will
stay on the sideline at the end of 2Q, just act like
it’s an extra long TV timeout and pick things right
back up with the 3Q kickoff as if it was the next play
of the 2Q?  Will that work?  Given what we fans continue
to experience on gamedays, I think that is a reasonably
good plan. Today is a fresh start with another frosh
QB and all bets are off on expectations?  This could be either
be one of the historic nights in Vol football history or
one of the most difficult nights a first time Vol QB
ever experiences for their fist start.  The SC D-unit
is for real and they would be a handful for the Vol O-unit
even if Bray & Hunter were still in the line up.  I really
hate Garcia is gone.  You always had a chance as a SC
opponent if Garcia was in the line up.  Shaw may wind up
being a consistently reliable QB for the ole ball coach
at SC and that would not be good news for opponents.  Ironically,
the ole ball coach has not had reliable QB’s at SC for most
of his tenure in Columbia.  Regardless, it’s probably not
going to be a repeat of the black jersey game of 2009 for
a lot of reasons.  If the Vols pull this one out, a true frosh
QB is going to play a game that makes a Vol legend and a
superior SC team is going to make some key mistakes.  That
can happen and Neyland Stadium is an excellent place for
those events to occur.  It’s either a huge gameday for
a Vol SEC upset OR another 0 for SEC october.  The former
buys Dooley some well timed fan points and the latter
punts us Vol fans into 2012 on when will a Dooley
signature win happen.  Inherent with the latter outcome is
an increase in pressure that the Vols win against MTSU, Vandy
and Kentucky to reach bowl eligibility.  If the Vols were to
pick up a totally unexpected win on the road against Arky,
that would help the Dooley rebuilding train.  Lots of crucial
things in the air today for the Vols and and the SEC.  One thing
for sure, there are going to be a whole bunch of UGA fans
singing Rocky Top tonight if the Vols pull the upset at Neyland and
UGA is able to stop the current win streak by the Gators.  I’m not
going to weight in on those odds but Gameday 9 is an absolutely
huge day in the race for the SEC East title.
