Gameday 5 Vol Stuff

Gameday 5 brings one last chance for the Vols to fine
tune their gameday skills before jumping into a brutal
gauntlet that will line them up with the SEC East favorite
and the top 3 teams out of the SEC West.  Throw UGA in
with LSU, Bama, SC and Arkansas and we’re about to find
out if this young Vol team can compete with the best of
the best.  They weren’t exactly ready for prime-time the
last gameday we saw them battling an SEC opponent in the
swamp.  But, given that many Vols were making their first road
trip into a truly hostile stadium and they lose their big
play guy on their 4th offensive play of the game, that game
should not be used as a true measuring stick for the 2011
Vols.  The next 7 weeks will be and Gameday 5 needs to be
a building block for this young Vol team to gain experience
and confidence.  Buffalo will battle hard so hopefully nobody
in orange is looking ahead to the Dawgs.  How will the post-Hunter
offense look?  Will the young Vol defenders be able to play at
a faster pace than they did in the swamp?  Will the Vols kicking
game show signs of gameday stability?  Can Tyler Bray keep
opposing defenders from getting their hands on to many potential
interceptions?  Will the Vol running backs hit the holes,
break some tackles, make defenders miss and start to show the
running game can get it done?  I don’t expect all of these
questions to be answered today against the Bulls but it would
be good to see clear signs that point toward positive answers.

Gameday 4 Vol Stuff

Gameday 4 brings a welcome bye week to the Vols as
they prepare for another absolutely brutal October
gauntlet. Following the Gameday 5 match up with the
mighty Buffalo Bulls, it’s Georgia, LSU, Alabama and South
Carolina on consecutive gamedays.  And, November will
be far from a cake walk this year with MTSU, Arkansas,
an improving Vandy and a determined Kentucky road trip.
The Vols clearly have work to do before they kick off
that 9 week stretch to the end of the regular season.
Freshmen need to grow up quickly to play at a SEC pace
on defense.  Vols offensively will need to re-set after
the loss of their one big play guy that could take it the
distance anytime he touched it.  All the best to Justin
Hunter as he works through the surgery and upcoming rehab
of his knee.  Vols special teams and kicking game are still
searching for some stability and play making ability.
Unless the Vols play solid ball in those 2 areas,
October could be another 0 for SEC repeat of last season.

Good luck to the Vols as they work through the bye week
to be ready to go for a very tough SEC schedule in
October and November.
