Halloween Gameday 9 Vol Stuff (10/31/09)

Big gameday for the Vols as everyone is watching on Halloween night to see if they have recovered from the gut wrenching loss in Tuscaloosa last week.  It’s become clear this week that the Vols thought they could get a W in their second match up of the season with a #1 team and on the field, they certainly proved they were capable.  That’s encouraging to all Vol fans but the emotional impact of dropping that game in the heart breaking manner it happened can be a tough challenge for a team to overcome.  SC isn’t coming to town to throw a pity party for the Vols or to go trick or treating in Neyland.  This is a tough SC team coming to Knoxville expecting to win and coached by a guy that knows how to win in Knoxville.  It would be very encouraging to see TN take the ball on their first possession and run it straight down the field for a score.  As tough as SC is on defense, they have a hard time stopping the run.  Vols need to do some damage on the ground tonight and not put to much pressure on the air attack as SC has a very good secondary.  If it’s a big night for Hardesty & Brown, it could be a big night for the Vols. Regardless of how good the Vols O & D units play, it appears the special teams are going to continue to help keep the other team in the game.  This is the one area of the game that the Vols just seem to struggle to show any improvement and 8 games into the season, not much reason to believe there’s going to be a drastic change.  Maybe the return teams can start to make some plays to balance out the special teams performance as the Vols have come close, particularly on kickoff returns, to breaking some big runs. All the best to #8 in orange on keeping the good mojo going.  How cool would it be if Crompton winds up playing his way onto a NFL roster next season.  What a great story that would be for Kiffin to deliver to future QB prospects.  Expect Monte’s D unit to play tough again.  You can tell the players absolutely love playing for Monte and that ensures they’re going to bring it every gameday out of respect for their coach.
This is the first of 5 straight games the Vols should be favored in.  Let’s hope they can deal with the pressure of being the favorite during this home stretch of the 09 season.  All the best to the Vols in picking up the W on a Halloween night in Neyland.

Gameday 8 Vol Stuff (10/24/09)

Gameday 8 finds the Vols in familiar territory.  For the 2nd time in 5 weeks, the Vols go on the road to take on a #1 ranked team as a heavy underdog.  By virtue of the Vols blowing out UGA in their last gameday battle and the Tide looking less than intimidating in their last outing against SC, the Vegas dudes aren’t quite as pessimistic on the Vols chances today compared to their first #1 matchup in the swamp.  This appears to be a matchup that the Vols have the ability to hang with the Tide depending on 1) time of possession, 2) turn over ratio.  If the Vols lose one or both, watch out.  If the Vols can hold their own in both, this could be an interesting gameday.  I fully expect Monte Kiffin to have the D unit ready to go today given the extra week of prep.  As long as the Vol O unit can run some clock and not give the Tide short fields to work with, the Vol D unit will give the Vols a chance.  Kicking game will once again be big.  It seems like in a Vols-Tide battle, the kicking game tends to be bigger than other TN SEC battles.  Hold your breath here, Bama’s shown they’re very capable while the Vols at times tend to make the kicking game look like a lost episode from The Three Stooges.  I personally believe the Vols are very capable of doing well in the kicking game with the athletes they’re putting on the field but crazy things just seem to happen, particular when the Vols are attempting to cover.  All the best to #8 in orange for another Sports Center big play gameday (the good kind of big plays).  It will be very interesting to see how he does as you just know the Tide is not going to let him operate in a rollout mode all afternoon.  Make the big plays today Crompton and your team just might pull off the upset of the season in your 2nd shot of the season at a #1 team.  Wonder if Kiffin will do something today to stir it up a little with orange jerseys?  I don’t expect the Vols actually start the game with them on but it wouldn’t surprise me if they warmed up in all orange & then switched to white jerseys before kickoff.  If Kiffin pulls a surprise of that nature today, I can’t wait to see what he does next week on Halloween.
