‘Miss Margaret,’ Veteran Secretary to TN Secretaries of State, Dies Aged 86

Margaret Elizabeth Tolleson, known as “Miss Margaret” during 52 years of working for Tennessee secretaries of state, has died “peacefully at home” in Nashville, according to an obituary in the Tennessean.
From Ken Whitehouse: Tolleson, who for decades was known as the smiling face that greeted you when you walked into the office of the Tennessee Secretary of State on the main floor of the State Capitol, had been in and out of the hospital and rehabilitation facilities in the past year. She would have turned 87 next Wednesday.
Such was her popularity among Capitol Hill regulars that, on her 82nd birthday, then-Gov. Phil Bredesen stopped by her desk, took her hand and sang Happy Birthday to her. Bredesen, like seven governors and countless legislators, knew that when “Miss Margaret” was on duty, all was right with the world.
She served as executive assistant and scheduler to four Tennessee Secretaries of State: Joe C. Carr, Gentry Crowell, Bryant Millsaps and Riley Darnell.

The Celebration of Life Service will be on Mon., Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Incarnation.
