Haslam Signs ‘Health Care Freedom’ Bill

A proposal that would allow Tennesseans to opt out of the federal health care law has been signed into law today by Gov. Bill Haslam, according to a gubernatorial spokesman.
The “Health Freedom Act” (SB79) sponsored by Republican Sen. Mae Beavers of Mt. Juliet, had been approved by the Senate 21-10 and by the House 70-27. All the no votes came from Democrats.
Both the Senate and House passed their own versions of the legislation last year, but the two chambers never agreed on some details and the 2010 versions failed. This year’s bill omits one point of controversy in 2010 – a provision calling on the attorney general to file a lawsuit against the national health care reform law.
