Alexander Finds 13 Living Former GOP Chairmen

News release from Sen. Lamar Alexander’s campaign:
Nashville, Feb. 7 – The Alexander campaign today announced that all 13 living former Tennessee Republican Party chairs will serve as honorary co-chairmen of the Statewide Committee to Reelect Lamar Alexander. The announcement follows the campaign’s recent announcements of political and finance leadership.
Congressman John J. Duncan, Jr., says: “This unprecedented support shows how much Republicans appreciate Lamar Alexander’s leadership as governor and senator building a conservative grassroots, statewide Republican Party.”
Alexander said, “I am grateful for the support from men and women who have helped the Tennessee Republican Party grow from a minority of voters to our state’s dominant political party.”
The terms of the 13 Republican chairmen span the last four decades from S.L. “Kopie” Kopald, Jr., of Memphis who served from 1971 to 1974 to Robin Smith of Chattanooga, the most recent of the 13 to serve as state party chairman.

Some GOP Groups Condemn Governor for Retaining Democrats, Gays and a Muslim

Stewart County Republican Party Chairman Kyle Mallory says Gov. Bill Haslam’s greatest failing is that “he hasn’t cleaned house” by ridding state government of Democrats and homosexuals in key positions and by hiring a Muslim.
Mallory is one what he described as “10 or 12 Republican activists” urging county party organizations to adopt resolutions condemning Haslam and urging the Republican State Executive Committee to take some action against the governor.
His home county party has done so, including a concern over homosexuals working in the Department of Children’s Services.
At least seven other county GOP organizations have also adopted resolutions criticizing Haslam, though at least two restrict their criticism to the hiring of Samar Ali as director of international marketing with the Department of Economic and Community Development.

Republican Chairman Hails Republican Redistricting

Text of letter sent by state Republican Chairman Chris Devaney to county Republican chairmen across the state:
Dear County Chairs,
Over the past few days, I have received a few phone calls and emails regarding redistricting in Tennessee and wanted to take this time and let you know my position.
For more than a century, Democrats in Tennessee have controlled the redistricting process with an iron fist – manipulating districts and carving out our state to fit the whims of their politics.
Over the past decade, Republicans have made great electoral strides in the General Assembly, even after running in districts Democrats drew that they thought fit their own selfish political objectives. Republicans won a majority in the General Assembly because the majority of people in our state have been drawn to our overarching message of limited government, economic prosperity, and traditional values.
After a century of Democrat control, this year Republicans finally were able to manage the redistricting process. They have done so in a responsible and professional manner and I would like to applaud Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey, House Speaker Beth Harwell and the Legislative committees working on this issue. They sought public input and drew Legislative and Congressional maps that are fair, legal, and that represent the changing demographics in Tennessee.
While no map is ever perfect, and it would go without saying that there will be some electoral challenges for our Party in the upcoming campaigns of 2012; the overall big picture is that the Republican redistricting process has been a success and as Chairman of the Tennessee Republican Party, I support the work that has been done.
I want to thank you for the work you are doing across Tennessee and look forward working with you to advance our principles as a Party in 2012.
Sincerely,
Chris Devaney
Chairman
