Haslam Misses Obama Ft. Campbell Visit (Wasn’t Invited?)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam is not among those attending President Barack Obama’s visit with troops at Fort Campbell to celebrate the successful military operation against Osama Bin Laden.
Haslam spokesman David Smith said the Republican governor had a previously scheduled commitment Friday to attend a luncheon at the West Tennessee Strawberry Festival in Humboldt. Smith said the governor’s office was also not officially notified of the visit by the White House.
While Fort Campbell’s official address is in Kentucky, much of the sprawling installation is located across the state line in Tennessee.
Fort Campbell is home to the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, which was involved in the raid against bin Laden. It is also home to the famed 101st Airborne Division.

Ron Campbell, RIP; Plaza Room to Bear His Name

A room in the Legislative Plaza is designated as the “Ron Campbell Radio Broadcast Room” under a resolution approved unanimously Wednesday to honor the veteran radio and television personality who died Monday after a long bout with cancer.
Campbell served as the House broadcast officer since 1988, taping interviews with legislators on issues and providing them to radio stations in their districts.
He worked out of Room 16A in the Legislative Plaza. Under HJR129, sponsored by Rep. Jimmy Eldridge, R-Jackson, that room will now bear his name.
Rep. Johnny Shaw, D-Bolivar, led House members in a brief prayer for Campbell after passage of the resolution. Shaw, who is a radio broadcaster himself, said that he knew the “awesome” voice of Campbell before he ever met him. (Personal note: Ron did have a remarkably deep, resonate – even melodious voice – and used it in joshing as well as in broadcasting.)
Shaw said that, after meeting Campbell, “I found out the person was much greater than the voice.”
