TVA Campground, Marina Fee Plan on Hold With Lawsuiut

PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) — Changes to campgrounds regulations and pricing on Tennessee Valley Authority land are on hold while an association of campers, marina and campground owners sue over the changes, leaving some wondering what the possible changes mean for them.
Marshall County Tourism Director Randy Newcomb told The Paducah Sun (http://bit.ly/Rq0g9v) no one knows what to expect should the new policies take effect because each campground has a different agreement with TVA.
“It’s still unknown, which amazes me that they’re going ahead with a plan with this many unknowns. Nobody is getting the information they need,” Newcomb said. “No matter what, it’s not going to be fair as long as there are different agreements.”
TVA began changing campgrounds regulations and pricing in 2010, citing the need to streamline agreements and provide equal public access to properties leased to private businesses. Policies were set to be implemented Jan. 1, 2013, but a lawsuit has delayed some of changes for at least one more month.
The new rules were supposed to go into place on Tuesday, but the Shoreline Alliance filed suit in federal court Dec. 10, temporarily blocking implementation.

Now There’s a Tennessee Public Relations Alliance

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — An alliance has been formed by Tennessee public relations companies to offer statewide services to clients.
The Tennessee Public Relations Alliance is being coordinated by Nashville-based McNeely Pigott & Fox Public Relations. Charter members also are the Carter Malone Group of Memphis and Moxley Carmichael Public Relations of Knoxville.
All three will continue to maintain existing clients and pursue others. But the alliance will be available for businesses and organizations that need statewide communications services.

Education Reform. Tort Reform and now… Burial Reform (with a task force)

The Cemetery Task Force of the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance has been studying Tennessee’s burial laws and has decided they should be changed, according to the News Sentinel.
“There’s not a clear process for dealing with cemeteries,” said (archaeologist Patrick) Garrow, who was involved in revising Georgia’s cemetery laws.
With help from Garrow, the task force came up with three main goals to improve the preservation of cemeteries and the amount of information stored about each one.
The first goal is to address cemetery relocations.
“Right now in Tennessee, it’s easy for a property owner or developer to move them,” said Garlington.
According to ETPA, state laws offer very little guidance for properly moving cemeteries.
“They eventually become abandoned cemeteries,” Garrow said, “Families move on, and graves are forgotten.”
The second goal is to control the amount of new cemeteries and private burial plots created. Many counties allow citizens to bury loved ones on family land.
“It’s nearly impossible to keep up with it. We believe that there should be a statewide database of cemeteries,” said Garlington, “We can’t save or preserve places until we know what’s out there.
The last goal the task force has decided upon is establishment of a database of names and locations for the public to access. The information would help not only family but researchers and preservation groups.
“Ultimately our goal is to update the state burial law. This is the beginning of that process,” Garlington said.

Anti-Amazon Groups Airing TV Ads

The sales tax scuffle involving Amazon.com has gone to the airwaves, reports WPLN.
In new television ads, retailers call out Amazon for trying to sidestep a law requiring the collection of sales tax on Internet purchases.
AD: “Who gets hurt when out-of-state companies get special deals to come to Tennessee and get a competitive advantage over local businesses? Tennessee’s small business, that’s who.”
Small businesses – like Nashville Furniture and Interiors – are part the Alliance for Main Street Fairness, the Virginia-based coalition behind the ads. But Walmart and Best Buy are the deep-pockets involved.
