Magazine lists top TN lobbying groups

Southern Political Report has done a rating of Tennessee’s top lobbying organizations along with similar listings for a dozen other Southern states.

The magazine says the “rankings are based on the results of an online survey sent to lobbyists and government affairs specialists across 13 Southern states. In addition, top lawyers and lobbyists were consulted to make sure the rankings for each Southern state are as comprehensive and accurate as possible.”

Lobbying groups are divided into three categories – law firms that engage in government relations, small lobbying firms and associations that actively lobby the Legislature. A top five is listed for each category (sixth in Tennessee small firms, where there was a tie for fifth place). Here are the Tennessee listings as presented:

Law firms

Adams & Reese, LLP
Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC
Butler Snow LLP
Farris Bobango PLC
Bass Berry & Sims PLC

Small firms
Windrow Phillips Group
Smith Harris & Carr
Bivens & Associates
Johnson Poss Government Relations
(tie) McMahan Winstead and Law Offices of Tony Thompson

Tennessee Hospital Association
Tennessee Bar Association
Tennessee Medical Association
Tennessee Lobbyists Association
Tennessee Fuel and Convenience Store Association

Not surprisingly, lobbyists on the list are promoting their status. Adams & Reese, for example, declares in a press release that it is rated “#1” (in Alabama and Louisiana as well as Tennessee). An excerpt:

According to Adams and Reese Managing Partner and long-time government relations lawyer, Gif Thornton, “Adams and Reese is honored to be recognized atop these rankings in five states. It speaks to the hard work and dedication of our entire Government Relations Team, working together to build a strong presence throughout our regional footprint. We also appreciate the trust our clients place in us to advance their interests before state and local governments all over the South.”
