Campfield relocates fundraiser after pizzeria complaints

State Sen. Stacey Campfield said Thursday he will change the location of a planned Oct. 22 fundraiser in Nashville at the request of the owner of the pizzeria where it was originally scheduled.

Campfield, R-Knoxville, said he spoke with Scott DeSano, owner of DeSano Pizza Bakery, after a Tennessean report that customers of the restaurant complained, declaring they would never dine there again if the Campfield fundraiser is held.

The senator said DeSano told him some people were more harsh than that in objecting to the restaurant being the location of a fundraiser, hosted by Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, for the controversial senator.
“He (DeSano) is just a regular guy, trying to sell pizza. He’s not political,” said Campfield.

“Nobody should have to put up with threats against themselves, their employees, their business… It’s just bully tactics, like in the 1930s.”

The Tennessean quoted DeSano as saying he had never heard of Campfield, much less the event, until irate customers began calling. The fundraiser got more than usual publicity with media reporting that Campfield had initially and mistakenly sent an invitation to the gathering through his state email account.

Ramsey said he was surprised that Campfield had not first cleared the event with the owner, but “I’ll go wherever he (Campfield) says it’s going to be.”

Campfield said Wednesday he had tentatively lined up a new location for the fundraiser and expects to finalize the plans within a day or so. The event will benefit his reelection campaign against Knox County Commissioner Richard Briggs.

Ramsey also said he thought criticism of the Campfield invitation, sent to all legislators and staff, was unwarranted. Minutes after the email was sent, the senator sent another email asking that the first be disregarded as sent from the “wrong account.”

UPDATE: Writing on his blog, the senator elaborates on the 1930s comparison, rebukes “stalkers” and media, HERE.
Excerpt:
I have to admit I have some really psychotic stalkers out there. Most of them are from what I will say is a vocal, organized 2-3% of the population. The bullies are so psychotic they think threatening to do physical harm to a business or its employees is some how OK. That its “Gods justice” on those that dare disagree. Its even more sickening when the media champions this kind of behavior.
