Tennessee Tech Privatizes Custodial Services

Custodial services at Tennessee Tech will be provided by Service Solutions Corp. beginning May 1, 2012, reports the Cookeville Herald-Citizen..
The university signed a contract with the company on Feb. 10 that will allow it to take over the services at the beginning of May.
The move is expected to save the university approximately $1 million in direct costs annually.
However, custodial staff and campus community members have spent the last year speaking out against the move to contract out campus custodial services.
“What does this decision say about the lives and livelihoods of our friends and the integrity and security of our university? Some of us still want Tech to remain a family,” Tech faculty member Andrew Smith said.
The custodians have been petitioning, writing letters, and holding public displays in opposition to the decision, most recently holding a public prayer vigil on campus in light of the university’s decision to move forward.
….Every current custodial employee will receive a $3,200 severance payment and a payment based on their years of service. They will also receive payment for leave and compensatory time and have the option to take $6,400 in tuition benefits per year for two years.
All 60 of Tech’s current custodial employees are guaranteed six months of employment with Service Solutions at the same rate of pay they were awarded with the university. Fifteen of those 60 employees will have 15 or more years of service with the university, allowing them the opportunity to remain employees of the university if they so chose.
