Campfield Commentary Stirs a Flap (again)

In a radio show interview, Sen. Stacey Campfield has offered some thoughts on homosexuality and the nature of AIDs, including its origin, that has been greeted with considerable skepticism by bloggers for Nashville Scene and Metro Pulse.
An excerpt from the Huffington Post interview with Michelangelo Signorle:
“Most people realize that AIDS came from the homosexual community — it was one guy screwing a monkey, if I recall correctly, and then having sex with men. It was an airline pilot, if I recall.”
“My understanding is that it is virtually — not completely, but virtually — impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex…very rarely [transmitted].”

The response to this interview is more than people being “skeptical” about his views. His understanding of the history of AIDS reveals how steeped he is in sources that present “facts” based more on prejudice than science. However, his claim about AIDS being “virtually– impossible” to contract through Heterosexual contact is more than just incorrect, it’s dangerous. There is amble evidence that people can become infected through heterosexual contact. When people who should be educated and informed on a subject repeat this factual error, it makes it harder to convince people, particularly teenagers, that they need to practice safe sex.
As someone from East TN, I find it embarrassing that someone who represents my region as a political leader would speak in such a format, claiming “expertise” on a subject where his views are so far from what we know to be factual about this disease that they would be laughable (and he does make TN the butt of a lot of jokes) if he wasn’t someone who shapes state law.
I suppose the best we can hope for in this situation is that people who understand anything about AIDs may be more inclined to question whether his “facts” about homosexuality and young people are equally uninformed and potentially dangerous.

I don’t know how AIDS started. But I do know it affects women and men. But it seems homosexual men make up the majority of people with AIDS. Webster’s dictionary describes sodomy as two men having sex or a human being having sex with an animal. The Bible is clear that homosexual sex and that heterosexual sex outside of marrige is a sin.
