Knox Criminal Court Judge Facing Criminal Charges

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A Knox County Criminal Court Judge who is the subject of a criminal investigation is scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning.
Jail records show that Judge Richard Baumgartner was arrested and taken into custody Wednesday.
WATE reported that he was charged with official oppression.
Baumgartner, 63, announced in January that he was taking a medical leave. Afterward, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation revealed that the judge was under investigation.
The TBI, on Wednesday, refused to reveal any details about the nature of the investigation or the charges.
The Knoxville News Sentinel is reporting that the judge is expected to admit buying prescription painkillers from a felon under his legal supervision.
The judge has worked on several high-profile murder cases. He also helped create the drug court.
