Senate Approves Bill To Fine Those Knowingly Transmitting Hepatitis

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Senate has passed a bill that would create a $1,000 fine for knowingly transmitting hepatitis to another person.
The chamber voted 31-0 on Monday for the measure sponsored by Republican Sen. Stacey Campfield of Knoxville.
Criminal exposure to HIV is already a felony under state law. Campfield said he wanted to bring criminal exposure to hepatitis to the same level, including prison sentences. But he said the state’s poor budget picture wouldn’t allow for it to be more than a misdemeanor.
The companion bill is awaiting a hearing in a House subcommittee.
