Former Vol Peyton Manning tops 2014 NFL Top 100

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee  — Tennessee’s favorite former quarterback is the best player in the NFL, according to his peers.

When the NFL Network revealed the top finishers on its player-selected 2014 NFL Top 100 on Wednesday night, Peyton Manning claimed No. 1.

Manning finished No. 2 behind Vikings running back Adrian Peterson last season. Leading the Broncos to a Super Bowl appearance while setting an NFL record for passing touchdowns (55) and passing yards (5,4447) pushed the former Vol ahead of Peterson (4th), Tom Brady (3rd) and Calvin Johnson (2nd) this year.

A cast of players weighed in on why Manning is the best. Some of more colorful comments included:

“He’s not going to beat anybody in a race, or surprise anybody with agility drills or anything. But year in and year out he’s the least sacked man in the league.” – Brent Grimes, Dolphins cornerback

“When I see his interviews, he’s like ‘Da, Da, Da … I could have done this better.’ I’m like, ‘Peyton, no you couldn’t have.'” – Joe Haden, Browns cornerback

“I’ll be covered sometimes, and he”ll just put it in the hole. It’s just like catching tissue paper, because it’s right in the basket.” – Demaryius Thomas, Broncos wide receiver

“He really is an offensive coordinator that can throw a football. That’s cheating.” – Rashad Jennings, Giants running back

“Peyton Manning equals the best. There’s really nothing else today. There’s no argument about it. He’s the best in the NFL right now.” Tyrann Mathieu, Cardinals defensive back
