#PracticeGram: Scenes from Tennessee football this week

KNOXVILLE, TennesseeButch Jones says there are no off-days in August, which unfortunately proved true for me on Thursday.

But while the Vols had meetings and weight-lifting, they didn’t practice on Thursday.

Tennessee practices on Friday afternoon at Haslam Field. On Saturday, the Vols will have a morning session at Haslam before moving over to Neyland Stadium for a closed scrimmage in the evening.

We’ll have plenty of coverage to come down. In the meantime, here are some images from the last two practices.

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — The latest installment of images from Tennessee’s football practice is here.

Monday’s practice starts at about 4:30 p.m., which means we’ll have post-practice updates beginning at about 7 or so.

Video: The best linebacker hits of Tennessee practice this week


KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — We’ve talked all spring about how new Tennessee coach Butch Jones likes to foster competition in every practice.


The result is a lot of intensity from players and — as you can see in the video from Tuesday above — from coaches.


It also makes practice infinitely more interesting for those of us watching on the sidelines. (Open practices are great and all, I used to joke, except for those two hours when you have to actually watch practice).


Whether it’s the newness of Jones’ system, the promise of new wrinkles on both sides of the ball or the looming personnel questions for the Vols in 2013, practices this spring have ranged from from mildly interesting to riveting. That’s not bad.

Butch Jones’ 1st staff meets the press: A roundup of the most interesting notes and quotes (with video)

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Butch Jones has been on a whirlwind media tour this week. On Thursday, it was time for his assistant coaches to get in on the fun.

We talked to seven on-field assistants and one strength coach today. Two assistants — receivers coach Zach Azzanni and assistant head coach/defensive line coach Steve Stripling — are preparing for bowl games.

That’s a lot to sift through, and some of the coaches’ answers will find there way into stories in the next week or so. For now, here’s a roundup of the most interesting notes and quotes from today’s media session.
