RB Derrell Scott’s decision on Monday could help ease Vols’ backfield worries

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — It was considered a given that Tennessee would add another running back in the Class of 2014.

The only question was if it would be a last-second fill-in who had been committed to a non-BCS school (think Jabo Lee from last year) or one of the Vols’ top targets?

On Monday, Tennessee will find out if running back Derrell Scott of Havelock, N.C., is the answer to their running back questions.

The four-star, 5-foot-11, 180-pound all-purpose back will choose between the Vols, South Carolina and Florida.

Scott has said the Gators are in third place, meaning the decision will come down to the two teams that have recruited him the longest — the Vols and Carolina.

Based on the 247Sports Crystal Ball, momentum seems to be swinging in Tennessee’s direction. Butch Jones and Steve Spurrier will have dueling in-home visits this week.

Why would Scott’s commitment be important? The Vols are losing two scholarship backs from the already thin 2013 squad. Both of the newcomers already in the class — Jalen Hurd and Treyvon Paulk — are coming off serious injuries. Hurd is expected to be an impact player, but the Vols would prefer a greater margin for error. Scott would provide it.

Steve Spurrier seemed to backtrack a bit from the hard line on Saturday when referencing his star player’s injury.

But does anyone else find this quote curious: “If he never plays another snap here, we all should be thankful and appreciative that he came to South Carolina.”

The 14th-ranked Gamecocks (4-1, 2-1) play Arkansas this weekend and then the Vols on Oct. 19.

Butch Jones to take spin through ESPN ‘car wash’ on Tuesday

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Tennessee coach Butch Jones will be one of six SEC coaches to go through the ESPN “car wash” on Tuesday.

The car wash is a metaphor — we think — for the whirlwind of interviews that coaches go through for various shows while spending the day at the network’s Bristol, Conn., headquarters.

Jones will be joined by Arkansas coach Bret Bielema, Auburn’s Gus Malzahn, Florida’s Will Muschamp, South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier and Kentucky’s Mark Stoops.

ESPN said the coaches could appear on College Football Live, SportsCenter, First Take and Highly Questionable on television, and SVP & Russillo, The Herd, Coach and Company and SportsCenter Tonight on radio. The coaches may also do ESPN.com chats or podcasts.

ESPN had exclusive access to coaches during last week’s SEC Media Days, so it’s unclear what might be asked just a few days later.

One festering argument leftover from last week might be the mini-feud between Malzahn and Bielema over fast-paced offenses.

Bielema believes fast-paced offenses increase the risk of player injuries; Malzahn was dismissive of that idea.

Here’s Jones’ complete schedule, provided by UT. Some of the segments will air or be published later.
