49 SEC players were drafted by NFL teams this month, but 4 teams didn’t take any

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — My radio colleague Vince Ferrara has written up a comprehensive rundown on the 49 SEC players drafted by NFL teams and where they fit on their new clubs.

He tackles everyone from Jadeveon Clowney, No. 1, to Michael Sam, the 49th pick from the SEC and the 249th overall.

Here’s another interesting tidbit: The Houston Texans took five SEC players, including Clowney, and the St. Louis Rams drafted four, including Sam. Seattle, Miami, Cincinnati and Kansas City had three each.

Four teams — Dallas, San Diego, Minnesota and the N.Y. Jets — didn’t have any.

Butch Jones dismisses Jadeveon Clowney-Antonio Richardson storyline

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Have you heard that Tennessee lineman Antonio “Tiny” Richardson must avenge last year’s game against South Carolina’s Jadeveon Clowney?

The storyline is bogus, Vols coach Butch Jones said forcefully on Tuesday.

“Too much is made of that,” Jones said.

Here’s the storyline Jones doesn’t like: Richardson played a flawless game against Clowney in 2012, only to miss a block on the final play and thus cost Tennessee the game. Now he’s searching for redemption.

Given that there will be roughly 500 stories written about Clowney and Richardson this week, Jones was wise to weigh in.

Jones’ main objection: It’s not a one-on-one battle betweeen Richardson and Clowney. It wasn’t in 2012, and it won’t be this year.

“He’ll line up on Ja’Wuan James just as much as he does Tiny,” Jones said.

I’ll have more later tonight on GoVolsXtra and in Wednesday’s News Sentinel.

Jadeveon Clowney says ‘miscommunication’ is in past, but when will he return to field? (video)

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — South Carolina star defender Jadeveon Clowney said a misunderstanding between himself, the training staff and coaches has been resolved and he’s looking forward to returning to the field.

Clowney didn’t say when that would be.

The 14th-ranked Gamecocks (4-1, 2-1 SEC) play Arkansas on Saturday. They face Tennessee (3-3, 0-2) on Oct. 19.

The Vols don’t play on Saturday.

Steve Spurrier seemed to backtrack a bit from the hard line on Saturday when referencing his star player’s injury.

But does anyone else find this quote curious: “If he never plays another snap here, we all should be thankful and appreciative that he came to South Carolina.”

The 14th-ranked Gamecocks (4-1, 2-1) play Arkansas this weekend and then the Vols on Oct. 19.
