KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart’s overall annual compensation is in line with the SEC average, according to a database of AD salaries.

Hart makes $817,250 annually, which puts him above the SEC median salary of $674,659. But because there are no performance bonuses tied to his contract, his maximum compensation is actually below the league median.

USA Today does a great of compiling salary databases in college athletics, and its comprehensive athletic director database released last week is the latest example.

Tennessee is 9th ‘most valuable’ team in college football, according to Forbes

dave-hart-kns.JPGKNOXVILLE, Tennessee Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart and new coach Butch Jones talk frequently of the importance of the Vols’ football “brand.”

Even former Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer, when I spoke to him earlier this month at his Hall of Fame induction, spoke of the importance of rebuilding Tennessee’s iconic national brand in college football.

“We have built a brand at Tennessee that we lost, but we can get back,” Fulmer said.

Despite five years of mediocre football, the road may not be as long as some think.

For Butch Jones and Tennessee, patience pays off (updated with comments from Cincinnati AD)

butch-jones.jpgKNOXVILLE, Tennessee — The story of how Cincinnati coach Butch Jones got to Tennessee is one of persistence and patience.

Jones interviewed with Kentucky, then Purdue, then Colorado. He had offers from at least the last two, and maybe all three. But he never pulled the trigger.

There was one job that Jones wanted badly, and even when it appeared that the Vols were on the verge of hiring other candidates, he never closed the door on coming to Knoxville.

Tennessee coaching search: Making the case for patience, not panic (column)

dave-hart-kns.JPGKNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Sometimes in the frenzy of the 24-hour news cycle, it’s easy to lose perspective.

So let’s steal some advice given by Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart when he began the search to replace Derek Dooley: “People need to take a deep breath,” he said.

Hart may not be the most popular man in Knoxville today. And some may find that the words he spoke 18 days ago — “We’re fine; I’ve done this many times.” — seem far less reassuring now.

But most coaching searches take plenty of twists and turns. It’s not fair to judge the search until it produces a new coach.

Names to watch: Tennessee coaching search Day 18 (updated Dec. 6)

butch-jones.jpgKNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Twenty-four hours ago, Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart thought his search for a new head coach was wrapped up.

Today, Hart was back in town, plotting the next direction after being turned down by Louisville coach Charlie Strong.

As Hart refocuses the search, we refreshed our list. We don’t know for a fact that Hart will remove some of his previous parameters — like required head coaching experience — but it’s at least a possibility. Our new list reflects that.

Tennessee’s search: Is it down to Mike Gundy and Charlie Strong?

charlie-strong2.jpgNEW YORK — There’s still much we don’t know now, and might not ever know, about Tennessee Athletic Director Dave Hart’s search for a new football coach.

So let’s focus on what we can reasonably infer.

As of Monday, Hart appears to have at least two very solid candidates waiting for an offer. One, I think, would say yes. The other I’m not so sure about.

The first candidate is Louisville’s Charlie Strong. The second is Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy.

Names to Watch: Tennessee coaching search Day 3 (updated Nov. 21)

Thumbnail image for jon-gruden-ap.jpgKNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Speculation continues to swirl around Jon Gruden as Tennessee’s coaching search enters Day 3.

Whatever the outcome, Gruden will have the opportunity to be a very rich man if he decides to leave the cozy confines of ESPN’s Monday Night Football broadcast booth.
Tennessee now has the financial flexibility to pursue Gruden or a similar big-name coach.
At least one report said Arkansas reached out to Gruden on Tuesday. Commercial Appeal sports writer Ron Higgins tweeted that Gruden had “supposedly” rebuffed the deal, and Tennessee was preparing its own “mind-blowing” offer to lure Gruden to Knoxville.

Names to Watch: Tennessee coaching search Day 2 (updated Nov. 20)

jon-gruden-ap.jpgKNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Assuming the Vols target a sitting head coach, there probably won’t be much movement in Tennessee’s search until after the regular season ends.

That’s why most of this week, like Day 1, will probably pass uneventfully.
There’s always the Jon Gruden factor, of course. One Arkansas reporter said the Razorbacks have already made an offer. Will Dave Hart have the money to get in a bidding war?

Names to Watch: Tennessee coaching search (updated Nov. 19)

dave-hart-kns.JPGKNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Tennessee Athletic Director Dave Hart won’t be taking any public input on his search for Tennessee’s next head football coach, but that won’t stop the speculation.

So as the most important coaching search of Hart’s tenure gets underway today, we’re unveiling our Names to Watch list.

Let’s make this clear: This list is highly speculative. If we have actual concrete news about a coaching candidate, we’ll post a story about it on GoVolsXtra, link it here and then add or subtract the coach from the list accordingly.

Tennessee’s Derek Dooley talks about post-game call from Dave Hart

Thumbnail image for derek-dooley-tennesssee-ncstate.JPGKNOXVILLE, Tennessee — A day after falling to 0-5 in the SEC with a loss at South Carolina, Tennessee coach Derek Dooley got a phone call from his boss.

If a chill went down his spine on Sunday when Tennessee Athletic Director Dave Hart called, Dooley didn’t acknowledge it.

“I hadn’t talked to him after the game. We usually talk on Mondays. He wanted to make sure that I understood that he wasn’t going to be in Monday,” Dooley said. “We had our normal conversation about the game and what lies ahead.”
