Departure of Justin Hunter highlights Tennessee’s massive holes to fill at receiver in 2013

justin-hunter-amy-smotherman-burgess.JPGKNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Justin Hunter (sort of) announced Monday what most had long assumed: He will forgo his final year of eligibility to enter the NFL draft.

Junior Cordarrelle Patterson will likely take the same path, although he deserves the chance to make the announcement on his own terms.*

Hunter and Patterson will get the most attention, but the loss of two seniors — tight end Mychal Rivera and receiver Zach Rogers — will also seriously deplete the Vols’ receiving game.

There is no position that will undergo a greater rebuilding in 2013, and first-year coach Butch Jones and his newly hired receivers coach, Zach Azzanni, will have to break in receivers this spring and summer in order to have some bodies ready for the opener.

Mel Kiper’s latest on Tennessee prospects Cordarrelle Patterson, Justin Hunter and others

cordarrelle-patterson.jpgKNOXVILLE, Tennessee — ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper said today that he believes Tennessee junior wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson could be a mid-first round NFL draft selection.

If he stays for his senior year, Kiper said, Patterson could go in the top five overall picks.

I’m not an agent or a financial adviser, but that doesn’t seem like much of a choice. My free advice to Patterson is to start getting ready for April’s draft.

Tyler Bray, Justin Hunter, Cordarrelle Patterson should return for senior year, ESPN analyst says


KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray and receivers Cordarrelle Patterson and Justin Hunter will have to make a choice after this season: Leave early for the NFL or stay for their senior seasons?

ESPN college football and NFL draft analyst Todd McShay has some advice for all three: Stick around.

McShay made the comments on a media conference call Friday.

Tennessee preps for scrimmage in Johnson City on Day 2 of trip

vols-practice-0810-brimer.jpgJOHNSON CITY, Tennessee — The first Tennessee football practice at Milligan College will likely come on Monday, when the weather looks like it will be sunny and clear here in northeastern Tennessee.

In the meantime, the Vols will scrimmage today at Science Hill High School before taking an off-day for meetings and video work Sunday.
