KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — More teammates raved about freshman receiver Marquez North on Sunday and during his post-practice press conference, head coach Butch Jones backed them up.

“In three short practices, he’s proven he’s going to be one of our play-makers,” Jones said.

More notes and quotes from Day 3:

* Jones said he was generally satisfied with Sunday’s practice. “We continued to progress,” he said. “We maintained our focus and intensity through practice. We took a step in the right direction.”

* How does Butch Jones determine who to select for the pre-practice one-on-one drills. “I’ll find an individual that I don’t think is really dialed in,” he said.

Sometimes, however, “they’re coming and asking me.”

* Jones singled out freshman cornerback Cameron Sutton as someone he was “really encouraged about.” Jones also said he thought Sutton could have an impact on special teams.

* Tight end Justin Meredith remains sidelined by the same hamstring injury that has vexed him throughout his career. Jones said Meredith is going through rehab and there is not timetable for his return.

* Two pressing name clarifications. Marquez North no longer has a capital Q in his first name. JaRon Toney has acquired a capital R. Make a note of it.
