KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — We’ve scrupulously documented the various Twitter tussles involving Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin (here and here, for example), but now Vandy assistants are getting into the act.
This Vandy-UT game on Nov. 23 is going to be a lot of fun.
Here’s how the latest social media drama started.
After Tennessee’s Orange & White Game ended on Saturday, Butch Jones tweeted out thanks to the fans who attended. He followed up immediately with this tweet.
KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Tennessee coach Butch Jones and his offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian made it clear from the moment they arrived here that they really like athletic, pass-catching tight ends.
And they didn’t think the Vols had enough on their roster.
Jones added two tight ends — Aaron Branisel and Woody Quinn — to last year’s class. He’s already got commitments from two more.
Both Ethan Wolf and Daniel Helm are from highly rated tight ends from the Midwest.

We might not be able to able to answer every question during the game, but we’ll try to keep the live blog moving with photos, updates, news and notes.

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — We’ve been #PracticeGramming each session this spring. We’ll be in the press box on Saturday for the Orange & White game, the 15th and final spring practice, so we thought it was a good time to compile all the best Instagram photos of the spring.
If you’re on Instagram, you can follow me here and see the photos instantly.
The best shots tend to be receivers catching passes, and the one above is a good example. Tight end Justin King grabbed a pass with one hand, bobbled it briefly and then held on tightly as he got his feet in bounds (above).
KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Two days before the Orange & White game, Tennessee went through every possible in-game scenario at Neyland Stadium on Thursday.
Even the basics — like pre-game warmups and post-game procedures — were outlined by the staff.
Both coordinators said to expect a fairly vanilla look. With a first-year coaching staff, the Vols have no desire to give away secrets to opponents.
KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Running back Marlin Lane, suspended for “disciplinary reasons,” was absent for the third consecutive practice and fourth since players returned from spring break.
But there was good news on that front. Coach Butch Jones continued to leave open the door for Lane’s return, saying there were “criteria” that Lane needed to meet in order to be reinstated.
Teammate and friend Rajion Neal said Lane was back in Knoxville, and thus presumably going to class. Neal said Lane was contending with a “sensitive situation” but that he hoped and expected him to eventually return to the team.
KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Dark skies and a quick rain marked the opening of what might be Tennessee’s final spring practice at Haslam Field Wednesday morning.
Then the sun came out, the rain departed and it got really hot in a hurry.
Coach Butch Jones wasn’t entirely satisfied with the start of practice. After a sloppy team period, Jones yelled, “Let’s get better at this!” Then, dissatisfied with the way players ran to the next station, he called the entire team to the middle of the field for some choice words (without using the microphone to amplify his voice).
KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Tennessee has one scrimmage left in the spring practice season — the Orange & White game on Saturday — but the Vols’ lengthy scrimmage two days ago at Neyland Stadium was the last chance to work on things without thousands of prying eyes in the stands.
We’ll have much more on the Orange & White game later this week. Given Tennessee’s precarious depth and the desire of a new coaching staff to keep certain things under wraps, I wouldn’t expect too many revelations in the game.
But let’s review Saturday’s scrimmage first. The offense bounced back with a victory and both quarterbacks looked sharper and more confident.
KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — The next time Tennessee plays at Neyland Stadium will be for the Orange & White game on April 20.
Until then, here are some shorts from today’s scrimmage. Check out all the #PracticeGram photos below. If you want to be bombarded with them all at once, follow me on Instagram. You can also view the photos directly on my tumblr page.
KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — The biggest news out of Saturday’s scrimmage came afterwards, when coach Butch Jones confirmed that Lane was out for “disciplinary reasons.”
Jones did not give a timetable for Lane’s possible return.
After Lane missed a practice last week, Jones said he was dealing with an illness in his family. After he missed practice on Thursday, coaches were more evasive about his status, and today’s announcement by Jones seems to cast doubt on Lane’s future with the team.
