KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Practice is done, and Tennessee is two days away from its first game of the season.
We’ll talk about the Vols, N.C. State and our SEC and national predictions right here at 2 p.m.

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — My official preseason prediction for Tennessee is due today. If you listened to my appearance on The SportsPage this morning, you already heard part of my explanation for why I picked the Vols to go 8-4 in 2012.
For math geeks, the rest of the story is here:
KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — When Tennessee returns to practice Thursday, there will be two big storylines: The Game 1 depth chart will be released, and the Vols will be focused exclusively on that season opener Aug. 31 against North Carolina State.
That means there’s no better time than today for my first live chat. We’ll get things started at 2 p.m., so have your questions ready.
KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — The first day of class is Wednesday, which means the campus is crowded with cars and pedestrians, and the football fields will be empty for the next 48 hours or so.
I’m budgeting an extra five minutes or so to get anywhere and hunkering down in the office to work on our football preview section.
In the meantime, let’s get to the 11….
KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — What if you played the college football season 50,000 times? Well, you’d be very tired, and there would probably be a lot of injuries, but you’d also eliminate many of the flukes and vagaries of a single season to produce an accurate measure of a team’s talent.
That’s the idea behind the Prediction Machine, which simulated the college football season 50,000 times and release its results a few days ago.
KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — The first Associated Press poll of the year is out, and it has Tennessee in 33rd place, eight spots out of the official Top 25.
Our own John Adams was responsible for about half of the Vols’ 15 points by ranking the team 18th in his poll.
I guess it comes down to how you define the preseason poll: Is it a power poll based on teams’ relative strengths and talents? Is it is a prediction of what you expect the poll to look like at the end of the season? Is it something else entirely?
KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — The second and likely final full scrimmage of the season is this evening at Neyland Stadium.
Many of the starting positions have already been sorted out, but there are a few races still remaining. The scrimmage should also help coaches sort out depth behind the first team.
JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee — I shot some extensive (and potentially award-winning) video at Monday’s morning practice. Unfortunately, my computer froze and all the images are permanently lost to this world.
I made up for it with some quick video from last night’s practice, which had a much shorter media viewing period. Still, it should give you some overview of Tennessee’s setup at Milligan College.
Jalen Reeves-Maybin, an athlete from Clarksville, became the Vols’ 16th commitment last week
Here’s what we know about the 6-foot-1, 200-pound linebacker:
JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee — The first Tennessee football practice at Milligan College will likely come on Monday, when the weather looks like it will be sunny and clear here in northeastern Tennessee.
In the meantime, the Vols will scrimmage today at Science Hill High School before taking an off-day for meetings and video work Sunday.
