Watchful Eye crime maps launched

watchful_eye_poster_t235_315.jpgThe News Sentinel launched its Watchful Eye interactive crime maps today. Each day at noon, we’ll be posting a new one: Monday is violent crimes; Tuesday is robberies; Wednesday is burglaries; Thursday is drugs and alcohol, and Friday is traffic.
Each map will be accompanied by a line or two of analysis of trends over previous weeks.
If readers are interested in doing their own searches of crime reports in the area, they also can go to the RaidsOnline crime map on KnoxNews.com, which includes continuously updated data from the Knoxville Police Department, Knox County Sheriff’s Office and many other agencies.

Religion columnist made decision to leave

When religion columnist Bob Hunt announced in his June 7 column that he was moving on, some readers wondered whether the News Sentinel was terminating his column.
bobhunt.jpgHunt has written vigorously on issues of faith, sometimes taking strong conservative views, such as a column last month criticizing society’s attitude toward abortion. But Hunt’s strong opinions had nothing to do with his departure. The News Sentinel was glad to have him as a contributor. But he has some other writing endeavors in the works and decided to end the local newspaper column.
We’ll miss his work and wish him well.
