Selection wasn’t always a big show

The NCAA women’s basketball tournament selection show wasn’t always a big show.
I can remember when the Tennessee Lady Vols didn’t gather at Coach Pat Summitt’s home, as they will Monday night. I also can recall the bracket being revealed early Sunday afternoon, rather than in prime time.

In 1993, the unveiling of the tournament bracket coincided with a major blizzard here. With the city crippled by the storm, I rode into town on the back of a truck. We stopped several times to help push cars out of driveways. I watched the show at the office and then trudged through the snow over to Thompson-Boling Arena to gather reaction.
The following year, I was the only one gathering at Summitt’s home to watch the bracket unfold. It was pretty much a spur-of-the-moment event. A phone conversation led to an impromptu invitation. Several players telephoned her during the show, checking for updates.
Not much of a show that day.
