In its annual performance evaluation from the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, Oak Ridge Associated Universities earned high grades — A- in three categories and B+ in three others — and received a total management fee of $3,466,768.

ORAU manages the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education for the Department of Energy.

“ORAU’s performance met expectations in contributing to DOE mission goals,” Johnny Moore, the Oak Ridge site manager who oversees the government contract, said in a Feb. 3 letter to ORAU President Andy Page.

ORAU received 94 percent of the maximum fee available ($3,688,051).

Moore cited many accomplishments in the letter, including ORAU’s support of more than 7,000 people involved with research projects, scholarship and fellowship programs, and other events.

“ORAU has been an effective partner providing support to the Office of Science, the Department and the government through multiple workshops, reviews, meetings, seminars, committees and other similar events,” Moore wrote.

“Although there were many instances where ORAU went above and beyond in these areas,” the DOE official stated, “there were several issues identified by program sponsors during the period that require attention and resolution.” The problem areas, such as “communication issues” that resulted in a “less than optimal performance,” were not specified in the letter released Monday.

Moore particularly praised ORAU’s “continuation of a sustained, strong and very effective safety and health program.”

ORAU’s management of the Oak Ridge-based institute continues to produce expected results, Moore said. He noted that it’s important for ORAU to maintain a strong partnership with DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory Site Office to help ensure DOE missions are successful in the upcoming year.
