ORNL’s Whitaker to talk about international safeguards

Michael Whitaker, leader of ORNL’s  International Safeguards Group, will be guest speaker at the Sept. 10 meeting of Friends of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Whitaker will talk about a recent two-week International Atomic Energy Agency training program that was hosted at ORNL for about 40 nuclear safeguards professionals and regulatory officials from 30-plus countries.

Whitaker has been involved in international safeguards for more than 30 years, having work at each of the three major plants in Oak Ridge (Y-12, ORNL and the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant). He holds degrees in mechanical engineering and engineering management from the University of Tennessee.

The lunch meeting of FORNL, which is open to the public, is held at the UT Resource Center, 1201 Oak Ridge Turnpike. It begins at 11 a.m. with social time, followed by lunch at 11:30 (available from Soup Kitchen at $7 per), and the lecture at noon.
